4K vs HD Cameras: Which Resolution Do You Need?

Resolution is the most common question we get: "Is 4K worth the extra money?" The short answer is yes for most properties — but not for every camera.

The difference in one line

A 4K camera captures about four times more detail than an HD (1080p) camera. That's the difference between "a person was there" and "I can read the license plate."

When 4K is worth it

  • Entrances, driveways and parking lots where you need to identify faces or plates
  • Large areas where one camera must cover a lot of ground
  • Properties where you frequently need to zoom into footage

When HD is enough

  • Indoor areas with controlled lighting where people pass close by
  • Secondary coverage (backyard, hallway) where detail matters less
  • Budget-conscious installations where the priority is coverage, not zoom

Expert tip: A common winning combo is 4K on the perimeter (front door, driveway, parking) and HD indoors. You get maximum detail where it counts without paying 4K prices for every camera.

Whatever you choose, our systems are designed so you can upgrade individual cameras later without replacing the whole setup.
